Having a problem with higher electric bills?

If you are having trouble paying your electric bills, contact Town Hall at 301-223-7711. Officials will connect you to the Washington County Community Action Council for energy assistance. Also, the town may customize a payment plan for you.

Higher electric bills might mean taking a second look at some possible reasons. The town has supplied the following list to consider:

• According to Allegany Power, this January is 20 percent colder than last year.

• Colder weather requires more energy for heat and for hot water.

• Heat pumps are less efficient below 30 degrees, requiring 2 to 3 times more energy.

• Due to holidays, the economy, or other factors, there might be more people at home for longer periods.

• School holidays, closures, or delays may have children at home more.

• Using appliances/electronics more often than last year may use more energy.

• Remember to turn off appliances and other electronics when they are not being used.

For more tips on reducing energy consumption, go to http://energy.maryland.gov.

Streets closed for sewer project

East and West Frederick streets in Williamsport are temporarily closed, except for residential traffic, while the town replaces collapsing sewer lines.

The renovations and improvements are part of the ongoing town sewer project and are expected to take several weeks.

For more information, call Donnie Stotelmyer at 301-223-7711.
